Do It, Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

Feelings are tough. They run our lives and they are usually all over the place. At least that’s been my experience.

Last week my pastor talked about doing things even when you don’t feel like it. Of course I’ve heard that before, but it really stuck to me this time. To be honest, I hardly feel like doing anything. Sometimes, I think I want to spend my days being out and about, meeting new people, making and impact, traveling the world, volunteering and so much more. But I don’t always feel like doing any of those things, so it becomes easy to not do them and lie to myself that they aren’t that important and that cuddling with the dogs and watching TV is fulfilling enough.

When I lie to myself about what I really want, I struggle figure out my life goals. I’ve always wanted to be so passionate about something that I become one of those people that says they jump out of bed because they are so excited about their lives. There are a ton of things that I love and that make me happy, but none that I want to jump out of bed for. I believe that I will come across that thing that I want to jump out of bed for, but until then I have to jump out of bed even when I don’t feel like it.

So my new motto is “Do It, Even When You Don’t Feel Like It”. This year I want to be more intentional with how I spend my time. In the past, my days would go by so fast and I would feel like I didn’t accomplish anything. I’ve always been a HUGE procrastinator. I just never seem to want to do things early. Even if I have more time when I’m first given a task, I will wait until the last minute to get it done. I think it makes me feel more accomplished if I got something done at the last minute when I was so “busy”. Such lies! I just don’t feel like doing anything.

I love being an entrepreneur because I get to work from home or anywhere I want and can spend my days however I want. When I first started working on my own schedule, I thought oh man this is going to be awesome! I’ll get to work when I want to! But the trouble with that is I never feel like working. I try to make a schedule, but with no one to observe me and tell me that I can’t nap instead of working, I hardly stick to it. I don’t have the discipline or the desire to get it all done.

But this year is going to be different. I’m changing my mindset. I’m done trying to figure out what I want and what I feel like doing. I’m just going to do it. The reality for me is that I never feel like doing anything, but once I’ve done it, I’m so glad I did! So why is it so hard for me to start? I don’t know and don’t care anymore. I’m done putting energy into figuring out why I would want to do things and figuring out when I will feel like doing something. This year is just about making a decision to do it and then actually do it. I’m going to create a schedule and stick to it even when I don’t feel like it.

So far it’s been going pretty well. The hardest part is just getting started. Once I get started, I feel pretty good about working. I start getting into a flow and realize that working isn’t so bad. I’ve also been trying to keep the 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins in mind. The 5 Second Rule makes so much sense, but of course it’s easier said than done.

I’m still finding what works for me and what will get me jumping out of bed, but for now I am simply going to focus on getting out of bed and getting to work because I’m committed to doing it even when I don’t feel like it. I’m excited to see where that leads me. I know I’m capable of so much, but I just have to get started to make it happen.

What’s your motto? How do you motivate yourself to get things done?

Be you. Be*YOU*tiful!

  1. I love this motto!! Even with a job I go to everyday, I’m still repsonsible for getting things done and managing myself. Some days I don’t feel like doing anything at work. Then I get home and I don’t feel like doing anything. I have projects that I want to do and hobbies I want to try, but I never feel like it. So how will I ever accomplish anything or know what things I really enjoy doing with my free time? Our feelings and moods change all the time so “ do it, even when you don’t feel like it” is a great Morton to be reminded of! Thanks for this post!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed this post! I hope you’re able to use this motto to start working on those projects and try new hobbies. Can’t wait to hear how it works for you!

    1. Thanks for reading! I’m glad you could relate! We used to have our parents make us do all of the things we didn’t want to, and now we have to parent ourselves! Adulting is definitely hard!
