Meditation

Time and time again I’ve heard that meditation is one of the key habits to success. Honestly, I’ve always been a bit of a skeptic. Even though I’ve heard all of the benefits of meditating, I just didn’t believe it was for me.

I’m currently reading You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero (review to come) and  once again meditation is brought up. Jen goes through the benefits of meditation and some quick tips on how to meditate.

After reading about meditation for the umpteenth time, I’ve decided to give it a shot. What’s the worst that could happen? And if it’s working for everyone else, it should work for me too, right?
id-100436459I decided today that I would challenge myself to meditate every day for the rest of October. That would be 21 days which is about enough time to make a habit. I figured that if I keep up meditation for 21 days I should get a better feel for it, see some positive results and create a new, healthy habit.

Since today was my first day meditating it was a little interesting. I set a timer for ten minutes so I wouldn’t be focused on time and decided ten minutes would be enough time to start.

I focused on breathing and tried to relax. It’s pretty tough emptying your mind. I had so many thoughts coming at me, but I tried to shew them away and stay focused on breathing. It was kind of nice though, because the thoughts that popped into my head felt positive and were based on making my day productive. So maybe it helped to clear my mind of unnecessary junk and allow good thoughts to come through.

Even though I set my timer, I still got antsy and had to look at the clock. I thought only a few minutes had passed, but to my surprise seven minutes had gone by! I was pretty pleased I had made it so long and continued on with the last few minutes of my meditation. When I was done, I felt at ease and ready to continue on with my day.

I’m looking forward to this journey to see what changes meditation brings into my life and will share my progress along the way.

Do you fit meditation into your schedule? How does it benefit your life?
